Who qualifies for SNAP in Hawaii?
Households must meet eligibility rules and prove their circumstances. U.S. citizens and some lawfully admitted permanent residents may qualify. Households where everyone gets or is authorized to get TANF or SSI are categorically eligible - no gross income, net income or asset limit. Households with an elderly or disabled member face only the net income test. Most able-bodied adult applicants must meet work requirements. Every household member must give or apply for a Social Security number. Under Broad-Based Categorical Eligibility the gross limit rises to 200% of poverty with an unlimited asset standard, and since 1 February 2025 BBCE households are not subject to the net income test either; a household with a member disqualified under SNAP may not get BBCE.

The first table the state publishes; the full wording, with net limits and maximum benefits where Hawaii prints them, is below.
Hawaii publishes its own standards - higher than the 48 contiguous states. SNAP Gross Monthly Income Eligibility Standards effective 10/1/2025, 130% FPL / 200% FPL (BBCE): 1 person $1,949 / $3,000; 2 $2,635 / $4,054; 3 $3,321 / $5,110; 4 $4,007 / $6,164; 5 $4,692 / $7,220; 6 $5,378 / $8,274; 7 $6,064 / $9,330; 8 $6,750 / $10,384; each additional member +$686 / +$1,056. SNAP Net Monthly Income Eligibility Standards effective 10/1/2025 at 100% FPL: 1 $1,500; 2 $2,027; 3 $2,555; 4 $3,082; 5 $3,610; 6 $4,137; 7 $4,665; 8 $5,192; each additional +$528. DHS says the chart is for reference only and an intake worker makes the final determination. These are the figures Hawaii publishes itself — we do not copy them from the federal table, because several states set a higher limit than the federal one and Alaska and Hawaii have their own entirely.
What do I need to bring?
Households must 'provide proof of their statements about household circumstances'. No document checklist is published on the page; after you submit you get a receipt with a tracking number and DHS contacts you for an interview. For the paper route DHS says to gather all required paperwork before visiting a processing center.
How long does SNAP take in Hawaii?
Federal law gives states 30 days, and 7 days if you qualify as an emergency (expedited). This state does not confirm those figures on its own page. If you need food this week, a food pantry does not make you wait.
Worth knowing in Hawaii
HAWAII HAS ITS OWN INCOME LIMITS - $1,949 for one person against $1,696 in the 48 states. Do not use the mainland figures here. Two things date the page: a typo, '$6.064' for a household of seven (it is $6,064, consistent with the $686 step), and a participation figure from FY 2014. Live notices: SNAP recipients on Hawaii Island, Oahu and West Maui (ZIP 96761) who lost August 2026 benefits to Hurricane Lala got an automatic 45% replacement effective 3 September 2026; the Ka'u and Kohala processing centres on Hawaii Island remain closed, PAIS stays open. The page cites the February 2025 BBCE change but says nothing about the 2025 federal law's work-requirement changes.
While you wait for a decision
SNAP takes up to 30 days. A food pantry takes an afternoon, and most do not ask for proof of income at all. These serve Hawaii:

Read on humanservices.hawaii.gov on Sep 10, 2026. Income limits are the ones Hawaii publishes itself — never copied from the federal table or another state, because several states set a higher limit and Alaska and Hawaii have their own. Federal rules changed in 2025, so figures move: last review Sep 10, 2026, and we re-check monthly. If a number here does not match what the state tells you, the state is right.
