Who qualifies for SNAP in Virginia?
Eligibility is based on household size and income; most households must meet both the gross and the net income limit. Households already getting TANF or SSI can qualify automatically (categorical eligibility). Able-bodied adults must work, do a work activity or meet an exemption, otherwise they are limited to 3 months of SNAP in 3 years. Exempt: 17 or younger, 65 or older, permanently disabled, temporarily unable to work for medical reasons, pregnant, living with a child under 14, caring for someone sick or disabled, working 20+ hours a week, getting or applying for unemployment, in WIOA/VIEW/Trade Adjustment Assistance, volunteering at a school or hospital, working in exchange for rent, enrolled at least half-time in school or training, or in drug/alcohol treatment.

The first table the state publishes; the full wording, with net limits and maximum benefits where Virginia prints them, is below.
VDSS publishes 'SNAP Income Eligibility Standards and Maximum Allotments, Oct. 1, 2025 to Sept. 30, 2026' (net 100% FPL / gross 130% FPL / BBCE gross 200% FPL / maximum allotment): 1 $1,305 / $1,696 / $2,608 / $298; 2 $1,763 / $2,292 / $3,525 / $546; 3 $2,221 / $2,888 / $4,441 / $785; 4 $2,680 / $3,483 / $5,358 / $994; 5 $3,138 / $4,079 / $6,275 / $1,183; 6 $3,596 / $4,675 / $7,191 / $1,421; 7 $4,055 / $5,271 / $8,108 / $1,571; 8 $4,513 / $5,867 / $9,025 / $1,789; each additional member +$459 / +$596 / +$916 / +$218. These are the figures Virginia publishes itself — we do not copy them from the federal table, because several states set a higher limit than the federal one and Alaska and Hawaii have their own entirely.
What do I need to bring?
Since the 2025 rule change you must now PROVE certain expenses with a document rather than stating them: dependent care (receipt from the care provider), shelter - rent, homeowner's insurance, taxes (rent receipt or landlord verification), utilities - electric, water, gas, phone, recycling (utility bill or landlord statement), medical - doctor visits, prescriptions, procedures, new glasses (bill, receipt or insurance statement). This applies to new applications, interim reports and recertifications; you get at least 10 days and a Verification Checklist saying what is needed. Reporting a new address also requires proof of shelter costs to keep the shelter deduction.
How long does SNAP take in Virginia?
Federal law gives states 30 days, and 7 days if you qualify as an emergency (expedited). This state does not confirm those figures on its own page. If you need food this week, a food pantry does not make you wait.
Worth knowing in Virginia
Two 2025-2026 changes are live and both can cost people benefits. (1) The federal law of 4 July 2025 raised the work-requirement age from 55 to 65, lowered the exempting child's age from 18 to 13, and ended local job-availability waivers; from 1 November 2025 there are NO exemptions any more for people experiencing homelessness, U.S. veterans, or 18-24 year-olds who aged out of foster care. (2) Expense verification is now documentary, not verbal. Also: VaCAP (Virginia Combined Application Project) ends 1 June 2026 - those cases move to ESAP at the next recertification and the benefit stops being a fixed amount. Virginia is replacing magnetic-stripe EBT cards with chip cards between September and December 2026; the balance carries over.
While you wait for a decision
SNAP takes up to 30 days. A food pantry takes an afternoon, and most do not ask for proof of income at all. These serve Virginia:
