Food Assistance / SNAP: SNAP in Ohio

Four ways, per the state page. Online: create or use an account at https://ssp.benefits.ohio.gov — the ODJFS 'How to Apply for SNAP' page links to https://benefits.ohio.gov. By phone: 844-640-6446. By mail or fax: send the completed JFS 07200 application (SNAP, Cash, Medical or Child Care Assistance, at odjfs.state.oh.us/forms/) to your county JFS office. You only need your full name, address and signature to file; leave questions you cannot answer blank.

You may qualify if your household's gross monthly income is at or below 130% of the federal poverty guidelines. Households that are categorically eligible or that contain an elderly or disabled person have certain factors waived and may be allowed up to 200% of the guidelines in countable monthly income. The 'assistance group' includes people who live with you and buy and fix meals together, plus spouses and children under 22 in the same household even if they do not. A person 60 or older who cannot buy and prepare meals separately because of a permanent disability, plus their spouse, may be a separate assistance group if the other members' gross income is at or below 165% of the guidelines. An assistance group with a member who won $4,500 or more in a single lottery or gambling game is ineligible until it again meets income and resource rules. Work requirements apply to some members.

Not listed up front. After the application the county JFS office holds an interview and then gives or sends a Verification Request Checklist (JFS 07105) naming exactly which verifications are needed and the deadline.

Confirmed in the state's own words: the county JFS office determines eligibility within 30 days of the date you turned in the application; some assistance groups may qualify to have their SNAP application processed within 24 hours or 7 days. An interview follows the application — by telephone by default, in person on request; the interview date and time arrive by mail. Recertification happens every four, five, six, twelve or thirty-six months, with an Interim Report in the 5th month of a 12-month certification.

In Ohio the program is commonly called 'Food Assistance' as well as SNAP, and the EBT card has its own name, the Ohio Direction Card (formerly the Ohio EBT Card) — those are the terms people search. The income chart is stamped January 01, 2025 and carries FY2025 figures, so it is roughly a year behind; it also gives only the gross limit, no net column. Benefits load on an assigned date between the 1st and the 20th of the month, stated in the approval notice.
