Who qualifies for SNAP in New York?
Low-income working people, senior citizens, people with disabilities and others. Eligibility is judged on gross income by family size, with three different charts depending on whether the household has earned income, and a higher chart for households with a member 60 or older, a disabled member, or dependent-care expenses. IMPORTANT: most New York households no longer face a savings or resource test - stocks, savings and retirement accounts are not counted. New ABAWD work requirements apply to adults aged 18-54, or up to 64 in some areas.

What do I need to bring?
Recent pay stubs; a list of household resources; current rent or mortgage statement; current property tax bill; current homeowner's insurance bill; Social Security card; utility bills.
How long does SNAP take in New York?
Federal law gives states 30 days, and 7 days if you qualify as an emergency (expedited). This state does not confirm those figures on its own page. If you need food this week, a food pantry does not make you wait.
Worth knowing in New York
Two things that change the answer here. (1) NY has effectively no asset test for most households - do not carry over a $3,000/$4,500 resource limit from other states. (2) NY publishes THREE separate gross-income charts, and the earned-income one is roughly 15% higher because of the 20% earned-income deduction; quoting only the no-earned-income chart will under-report who qualifies. Figures carry an explicit 'effective October 1, 2025' stamp, so they are FY2026. Replacement of stolen SNAP benefits has ENDED - myBenefits says applications for stolen SNAP benefits are no longer accepted, though stolen Temporary Assistance can still be replaced. New chip/tap EBT cards are being rolled out ahead of a 1 December 2026 retailer deadline. New Yorkers in NYC are served by HRA and the ACCESS HRA channel; the state page does not distinguish it. Summer EBT for children aged 6-16 is a separate application. The page is published in 14 languages.

Read on ny.gov / otda.ny.gov on Sep 10, 2026. Income limits are the ones New York publishes itself — never copied from the federal table or another state, because several states set a higher limit and Alaska and Hawaii have their own.
