Nutrition Assistance: SNAP in Arizona

Apply online through Health-e-Arizona Plus at https://www.healthearizonaplus.gov - one application covers Nutrition Assistance, Cash Assistance and AHCCCS medical coverage. DES calls online the easiest route and offers an eligibility screener before you apply. NOTE: healthearizonaplus.gov is geo-blocked to US traffic - it answered our request with a notice that access is limited to users inside the United States, which confirms the portal is live but means we could not read the application itself.

DES says the only way to know is to apply and go through the process, which includes verification and an interview by DES staff. Older adults aged 60 or over with no earned or self-employment income can use the Elderly Simplified Application Process (simplified application, interview and verification). Students: the temporary pandemic-era student exemptions ended - for new applications after 9 June 2023 and renewals from 1 July 2023 the ordinary student rules apply again. Survivors of domestic violence, sexual harassment, sexual assault or stalking should tell their DES eligibility specialist, as some requirements may be waived. Anyone getting Nutrition Assistance automatically qualifies for TEFAP emergency food.

Arizona does not publish an income table on the page we read. Do not use another state's numbers: they differ. Apply anyway — the state decides, and rent, utilities, childcare and medical costs are deducted before they compare.

Proof of citizenship and identity for everyone applying; Alien Registration Cards for non-citizens applying; Social Security numbers for everyone, or proof one has been applied for; proof of relationship (birth certificates work); name, address and daytime phone of your landlord or a neighbour; a signed, dated statement from a non-relative who does not live with you verifying your address and who lives with you, with their address and phone; proof of ALL money the household received last month and this month; proof that employment ended and the last date paid; a complete bank or credit union statement for the most recent month; proof of savings bonds, securities, retirement plans and life insurance; proof of rent or mortgage; proof of utility bills for the most recent month plus a statement of how you heat or cool your home; proof of child care costs for the most recent month; proof of medical expenses for applicants aged 60+ or on disability when the household total is over $35.00; proof of the legal obligation and payments for court-ordered child support paid this month and last month. Do not hand in original documents - mail, fax or upload copies.

Confirmed in the state's own words: a decision within seven days from the application date if you qualify for emergency benefits, and at the latest 30 days from the application date. An eligibility interview is required - by phone Monday to Friday 07:00-16:00 on 1-855-432-7587, or in person at any DES office Monday to Friday 08:00-17:00. Renewal periods range from three months to two years.

The local name is the trap here: Arizona calls it Nutrition Assistance, not SNAP, and its own pages say 'formerly the Food Stamp Program'. Benefit amounts for February 2026 may change for households receiving SSA or SSI because of the January 2026 Social Security COLA; notices go out in January. Stolen-benefit replacement is CLOSED: federal law covered thefts between 20 October 2022 and 20 December 2024 and the last day to report in Arizona was 4 February 2025. Arizona EBT cards are not insured; the first replacement card each calendar year is free, then $5 each, and a third request in 12 months can hold up the card until you explain. State law bars using the Cash Assistance side of the card at liquor stores, casinos, race tracks, adult entertainment venues and marijuana dispensaries, or for lottery tickets. Using more than 10% of benefits outside Arizona in six months triggers a questionnaire. A Restaurant Meals Program lets households where everyone is disabled, 60+, or homeless buy prepared meals with the EBT card. SNAP CAN is the state's employment and training program.
