Published and split by household type. The program year runs October 1 to September 30, or until federal LIHEAP funds run out, whichever comes first. Households with a disabled member, someone aged 60+, or a child under 6 can apply from October 1. Everyone else is processed from November 1 to September 30, or until funds are exhausted. One benefit per household per year.

Dates move every year and most states stop taking applications when the money runs out, not on the closing date. Checked Sep 10, 2026 — confirm before you count on it.

Crisis assistance is handled by the local HEAT office, not a central hotline: 'If you are in danger of shut-off, contact your local HEAT office for crisis assistance' (office list: jobs.utah.gov/community/scso/seal/documents/localoffice.pdf). Total household income at or below 150% of the Federal Poverty Level; the household must be responsible for home energy costs, have at least one adult (18+ or emancipated), and include at least one US citizen or qualified non-citizen.

Utah does not publish the benefit amounts on the page we read. It is paid to the utility, not to you, and depends on household size, income and fuel type.

Copy of your power and heat bills; proof of all household income for the month before you apply; proof of eligible medical expenses, child support and alimony paid that month; proof of disability if it applies. Local offices also ask for Social Security cards for everyone, photo ID for those 18+, and proof of birth date for a child under 6.

Moratorium (Shut Off Protection), run by the HEAT programme itself: protects eligible households from utility shut-off between November 15 and the following March 15, and requires a payment plan you keep to. Only for utilities regulated by the Public Service Commission. You must hold the account (or be spouse/adult resident), live at the address, have a termination notice or a refusal of service, have applied for HEAT, and (if 60+, disabled, or with a disabled child) have applied to the American Red Cross for utility help. Plus one of: income qualifies for HEAT, a medical or other emergency, job loss, or a 50% income drop, in the month of or before the application. Apply through the local HEAT office.

This comes from the Utah utility commission, not from the energy assistance programme — they are different offices and only one of them publishes it.

The October 1 vs November 1 split is the thing worth knowing: elderly, disabled and small-children households get a month's head start, and the money can run out before September 30.
