How do I apply for SNAP in Rhode Island?
https://dhs.ri.gov/apply-now. Online through the DHS Customer Portal at healthyrhode.ri.gov or the HealthyRhode mobile app; by phone on 1-855-MY-RIDHS (1-855-697-4347); by paper application mailed to RI Department of Human Services, P.O. Box 8709, Cranston, RI 02920-8787; or in person at a regional office. You must have an interview with DHS staff - they phone you, or you can call to reschedule; miss it without calling and you may be denied. Someone else can be your authorised representative if you name them in writing.
Who qualifies for SNAP in Rhode Island?
Based on income, expenses, resources and how many people live in the household. Rhode Island runs two income levels: households WITHOUT anyone 60 or older and without a person with a disability may qualify under 185% of the Federal Poverty Level; households WITH an older adult or a person with a disability may qualify under 200% FPL. Most households must also pass a net income test at 100% FPL. Households of one or two people may be eligible by meeting the gross test and not the net.

For households with an older adult or a person with a disability the page states the 200% FPL rule but does not publish that column. These are the figures Rhode Island publishes itself — we do not copy them from the federal table, because several states set a higher limit than the federal one and Alaska and Hawaii have their own entirely.
What do I need to bring?
Documents that verify your situation - there is a "Documents You May Need" page and a verification checklist. You may mail or drop off photocopies, or upload them to the Customer Portal or the HealthyRhode app. If DHS asks for more, you have 10 days to provide it.
How long does SNAP take in Rhode Island?
DHS has 30 days to decide. Expedited applications must be reviewed and decided within 7 days. You may qualify for expedited SNAP if you have less than $100 in cash AND less than $150 in monthly earnings, OR your housing expenses exceed your monthly income, OR you are a migrant or seasonal farm worker.
