How do I apply for SNAP in Pennsylvania?
Three ways, all from https://www.pa.gov/services/dhs/apply-for-the-supplemental-nutrition-assistance-program-snap : online through COMPASS, the state's benefits management website (compass.state.pa.us / compass.dhs.pa.gov); in person at your local County Assistance Office; or by downloading the paper application in English or Spanish and mailing or delivering it to that office. DHS says you do not need to know whether you are eligible - apply and they will decide. Track the application at https://trackmybenefits.pa.gov (covers LIHEAP, Medicaid, SNAP and TANF). An application may be filed by the head of household, their spouse, any other responsible household member, or a designated authorised representative (a friend, relative, neighbour or community organisation).
Who qualifies for SNAP in Pennsylvania?
Eligibility turns on income within the state's published limits; household details including health, disability status and size; work and volunteering for some adults; and school or job training, which can satisfy the work requirement. Pennsylvania uses broad-based categorical eligibility at 200% FPL, so these gross limits are roughly double the 130% figures used by states like Missouri - do not mix them. DHS flags the 2025 federal change directly: 'A new federal law requires some SNAP recipients to work, volunteer, or be in school or a job training program to stay eligible. To keep getting benefits, you may need to report this to DHS' - there is a dedicated page for adults without dependents. Since June 2025 Cash Assistance funds can also be used for online purchases. Pennsylvania reports semi-annually, not monthly.
