NJ SNAP: SNAP in New Jersey

Online at MyNJHelps.gov (the state application system for SNAP and WFNJ; 20-45 minutes). Pre-screen at NJHelps.gov (5-10 minutes). Paper application can be downloaded in 17 languages from https://www.nj.gov/humanservices/njsnap/apply/ways/ and brought, mailed or faxed to your County Social Service Agency. A SNAP household is anyone who lives and eats together. Household must be at or under the gross monthly income standard (185% FPL) below; households with someone 60+ or with a disability may qualify above it. Any household member over 18 can apply; seniors and people with disabilities can name an authorized representative. Students 18-49 enrolled half-time or more need one extra qualifier (20 hrs/week work, work study, approved NJ community college CTE program, on-the-job training, care of a dependent under 6, single parent of a child under 12, unfit for work, or WFNJ/TANF). ABAWDs 18-64 with no child under 14 face a 3-month limit in 3 years unless working/in activity 80 hrs a month.

For everyone applying: valid ID (driver's license, birth certificate, government ID); proof of where you live (lease, rental agreement, utility bill - not needed if homeless); proof of earned income (pay stubs, employer letter, recent tax records); proof of unearned income (award letter); proof of resources (bank statements); Social Security Number; proof of immigration status for non-citizens; proof of student status for college students. Optional, increases benefits: housing costs, phone/utility costs, medical expenses for anyone 60+ or disabled, child/adult care costs, child support paid.

The county has 30 days after the application to decide, and interviews you (phone or in person) during that time. Benefits within 7 days if expedited: under $150 monthly income and under $100 liquid resources; or housing costs above income plus liquid resources; or migrant/seasonal farm worker with under $100 liquid resources.

New Jersey pays a state minimum SNAP benefit of $95 a month: if the federal amount is lower, the state tops it up on the Families First card. Eligibility limit is 185% FPL (broad-based categorical eligibility), above the federal 130% gross test. The site has a 'Federal Changes' section and an ABAWD page for the 2025 federal rules. NJ warns about fake 'SNAP consultants' asking for personal data.
