Who qualifies for SNAP in Maine?

Any Maine resident who qualifies on income, household composition, expenses and other criteria. A household is everyone who buys and cooks most meals together; a spouse and children under 22 must be included. Income counted from most sources (cash assistance, Social Security, unemployment, child support). General work requirements apply at ages 16-59; ABAWD rules (ages 18-64, no child under 14) limit benefits to 3 months in 36 unless 80 hours/month of work or an exemption. Maine extends SNAP to certain noncitizens who do not qualify federally.

The first table the state publishes; the full wording, with net limits and maximum benefits where Maine prints them, is below.

State table, gross monthly income at 200% of FPL (Maine uses broad-based categorical eligibility): 1 person $2,609; 2 $3,525; 3 $4,442; 4 $5,359; 5 $6,275; 6 $7,192; 7 $8,109; 8 $9,025; each additional member +$917. Marked 'Effective January 15, 2025'. Maximum monthly SNAP amount on the same table (effective October 1, 2025): 1 person $298; 2 $546; 3 $785; 4 $994; 5 $1,183; 6 $1,421; 7 $1,571; 8 $1,789; +$218 each additional. These are the figures Maine publishes itself — we do not copy them from the federal table, because several states set a higher limit than the federal one and Alaska and Hawaii have their own entirely.

What do I need to bring?

Proof of identity, household income, household expenses and other items depending on circumstances, within 10 days. Sending pay stubs, rent receipts, childcare receipts and utility bills with the application speeds it up. The page lists accepted proofs for rent/mortgage, property tax, utilities, child support, dependent care and excess medical expenses.

How long does SNAP take in Maine?

OFI has 30 days to decide after the application is received, and sends a Notice of Decision within 30 days. An interview (phone or in person) is required for every applicant. If approved and you never had an EBT card, it arrives 5-7 days after the decision. The page does not state a 7-day expedited standard.

Worth knowing in Maine

Maine EBT cards are restricted to Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont since August 2025 as anti-skimming protection (does not affect online grocery orders delivered in Maine); call OFI to use the card elsewhere. Income table is dated January 15, 2025 (calendar-2025 FPL) while the benefit amounts are effective October 1, 2025 - the income column may be a year behind. ABAWD time limit described as 3 months in a 36-month period, consistent with the 2025 federal changes.

Same office, second bill

Read on maine.gov on Sep 10, 2026. Income limits are the ones Maine publishes itself — never copied from the federal table or another state, because several states set a higher limit and Alaska and Hawaii have their own. Federal rules changed in 2025, so figures move: last review Sep 10, 2026, and we re-check monthly. If a number here does not match what the state tells you, the state is right.
