Who qualifies for SNAP in Maine?
Any Maine resident who qualifies on income, household composition, expenses and other criteria. A household is everyone who buys and cooks most meals together; a spouse and children under 22 must be included. Income counted from most sources (cash assistance, Social Security, unemployment, child support). General work requirements apply at ages 16-59; ABAWD rules (ages 18-64, no child under 14) limit benefits to 3 months in 36 unless 80 hours/month of work or an exemption. What do I need to bring?
Proof of identity, household income, household expenses and other items depending on circumstances, within 10 days. Sending pay stubs, rent receipts, childcare receipts and utility bills with the application speeds it up. The page lists accepted proofs for rent/mortgage, property tax, utilities, child support, dependent care and excess medical expenses.
How long does SNAP take in Maine?
OFI has 30 days to decide after the application is received, and sends a Notice of Decision within 30 days. An interview (phone or in person) is required for every applicant. If approved and you never had an EBT card, it arrives 5-7 days after the decision. The page does not state a 7-day expedited standard.
