You do not have to prove you are poor
This is the clearest statement in the batch, in the food bank's own words. For its Mobile Markets: 'Everyone is welcome. No ID, proof of income, or referral is needed.' For its partner pantries: 'At the majority of food pantries, eligibility is based on self-attested need. You do not need to have a referral, and income is not a factor to receive food. At some pantries, you may be asked to provide a form of identification and/or proof of your address; you may also be asked about how many people live with you.' It also says plainly that you do not have to be unemployed, do not have to be homeless, and do not need to be receiving SNAP or any other benefit. Immigration status is not mentioned as a condition. The site's advice: call the pantry ahead and ask about any eligibility or documentation it requires.

How do I actually get food from Northern Illinois Food Bank?

Two routes. (1) Mobile Markets, run by the food bank itself: a food truck that comes to a community for about an hour and a half with bread, cereal, meat, dairy and fresh produce. Check the Mobile Market calendar on solvehungertoday.org/get-groceries/ (a printable monthly calendar is posted) to see if one is coming to your community. Currently drive-thru, first come first served. (2) A partner pantry: it works with over 900 pantries, mobile markets and soup kitchens (over 200 of them brick-and-mortar pantries); use the 'find food' button at the top of the site. It also runs My Pantry Express, an online food pantry where you place a grocery order for free pickup or delivery at select locations; the Neighborhood Market pantry at 1397 Sandy Hollow Rd, Rockford; a Senior Grocery Mobile at some low-income senior housing; child nutrition programmes; and SNAP application help.

When is Northern Illinois Food Bank open?

Mobile Market dates and times are on the monthly calendar at solvehungertoday.org/get-groceries/, with a printable version. Pantry hours vary - the site says to use the contact details in the finder to confirm hours of distribution and residency requirements.

Does Northern Illinois Food Bank cost anything?

Free. The site describes 'free and fresh groceries' at Mobile Markets, says a food pantry is 'a location where people can access food for free', and My Pantry Express pickup and delivery are 'at no additional charge'.

What do I need to bring?

Nothing is required at Mobile Markets - no ID, no proof of income, no referral. At some partner pantries you may be asked for ID and/or proof of address, so bring them if you have them and call ahead to check.

Where Northern Illinois Food Bank works

13 counties in northern Illinois, named on its site: Boone, DeKalb, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kankakee, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, Ogle, Stephenson, Will and Winnebago. Four distribution centres: Geneva (main, 273 Dearborn Court), Rockford (1397 Sandy Hollow Rd), Lake Forest (13950 Business Center Drive) and Joliet (171 South Larkin Avenue).

Worth knowing before you go

You may visit more than one pantry in a month: 'you are welcome to visit multiple pantries to ensure your needs are met during the month. Pantries do not share who comes to visit.' Some individual pantries do limit visits. Many pantries let you choose your own items rather than handing you a pre-packed box, and many also give out non-food items such as toiletries, paper goods and school supplies.
